Topic: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

I have windows XP pro and am trying to create a new partition to dual boot ubuntu.  So I boot up with the GParted disk, hit the auto configuration. then a bunch of white texts starts scrolling down a black screen. but then it stops and nothing else happens. the last line says

io scheduler cfq registered

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

Obviously there is a boot problem with the autoconfig option.
Just try another option from the boot menu.

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

I have tried many different options on 4 different versions the 2nd HP one works but I have no GUI I think if I knew the commands I could do it.

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

which is the Gparted version you used?
Do you have any error message?
Do you have a text screen, a black graphics screen, a graphics distorted screen?
Can you give more details on your hardware (motherboard, chip set, graphics card).

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

I have tried GParted 3.3-7, 3.4-7, 3.4-8, and 3.4-11. The 3.4-8 was the one I got the HP option to work but I didn't try it on the others.
NO error messages
yes i have a text screen graphics not distorted
I have a Sager NP2090
Intel Core 2 Duo 7300
NVidia 8600m gt 512 mb
2gbs ram
motherboard no idea

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

I have exactly the same problem with a Sony VAIO SZ61WN/C.

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

Sager NP2090
Chipset: Intel PM965 and ICH8-M

Sony VAIO SZ61WN/C
Chipset: Mobile Intel GM965 Express
Both models have quite new graphics cards (nvidia 8400M and 8600M).

My own desktop computer with [b]965[b] chipset works better with 0.3.4-6 and -5 than other livecd versions. Could you try this one, please?

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

I tried 3.4-6, none of the options worked, got the exact same result.

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

I tried all options on the 3.4-8 and 3.4-11 live cd's and nothing worked.

Sony Vaio
PCG-9Y3L

It also stopped at the same "io scheduler" lines.

Gentoo 2007.0 Minimal CD booted just fine though, so I might try to put gparted on a usb key and access it via Gentoo.

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

Another cause for boot failure is sometimes some plugged USB device, like keyboard or mouse.

Using a bootable USB key would be a solution. Another one is to use some of the various live cds that contain Gparted, like many Linux install CDs (Ubuntu, Fedora I think etc) and several rescue CDs.
The (former) livecd maintainer, LarryT recommended "sysresccd"
http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page

The development team doesn't plan further livecd version. So, you could try this.

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

I tried an Ubuntu 7.10 cd using the first option after a few seconds my screen turned off, tried it again in the safe graphics mode and the same thing happened

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

the system restore cd worked for resizing my partition, now I'm trying to install Ubuntu but my screen turns off after a few seconds.

Re: GParted text stops scrolling [solved]

Obviously, it is something related to your graphics hardware.
In these cases, you can use the "alternate" Ubuntu install cd. It doesn't use graphics for the installation.
