Topic: Clone HDD to SSD resize partitions first

I have a HDD that I want to clone to SSD. The HDD is 500GB and the SSD is 256GB. I have not gone through Windows setup yet.

Total size of HDD is 500GB
The partition sizes are:
/dev/sda1 (39.07 GiB) Recovery
/dev/sda2 (305.93 MiB) System
/dev/sda3 (58.59 GiB)
rest of space is unallocated, 367.80 GiB

I want to clone this HDD to a SSD, like I stated above, so I read I need to resize my partition to match the smaller drive size. Since the majority of the space is unallocated, if I clone to the smaller SSD, will the unallocated space just become smaller, or will this not work?

A disclaimer I should note, I do not plan on cloning using GParted, I plan on using clonezilla.

Based on the information provide (39.1GB + 0.3GB + 58.6GB = 98.0GB) this is less than your new 256 GB SSD so it should fit and should work.  As you mentioned there will be less unallocated space after migration.
