Re: how to format 80gb harddisk?

The easiest way is perhaps to use the GParted Live cd or usb. You have to boot your system with the 80 GB drive connected.
Then you have to select the drive in question as working drive in the right part of the toolbar (device selection). Then, the actual partitioning is displayed on screen. It you don't want keep anything you can proceed by deleting all the existing partitions, or by creating a new partition table (msdos type).
You have to make at least one new partition, by selecting the unallocated space and providing info about the filesystem you want to create (e.g. ntfs or fat32 for ms windows, ext2/3/4 for Linux etc). Then you press to Apply pending operations.
Please, look at the GParted manual in the Documentation web page, as well as the GParted Live manual.

Please, be careful to select the right device in case of more hard drives connected. Furthermore, take into account that the old disk content will be deleted after new partitioning, so be sure that you have kept backup copies of any important file. Recovering deleted files can be hard or even impossible.

Re: how to format 80gb harddisk?

ext2, ext2 and ext4 are used in Linux. If you don't use Linux, you don't need them.
GParted covers many file system types that are used in several sectors of the information technology.

If you plan to install an operating system on this hard drive, then the installer will make everything needed. If you just want to use the drive for file storage together with a computer running mswindows, then you have to select fat32 or ntfs.

how the file ssystem work

This is a rather advanced topic. The file system is the organisation plan of the files on the drive. There are tables where the operating system keeps information on where to look for the content of every file, as well as info related to each file (when it was created, when it was accessed last time, who is authorized to read or modify each file etc.

You can find lots of information by searching in google, the terms "how the file system works".

Re: how to format 80gb harddisk?

You can find a comparison between file systems here.
In fact, most of the file systems listed are obsolete or used in specific applications.

About internal details of the various file systems, take into account that in many cases details aren't known because they remain trade secret of the companies that developed them.
