Topic: Toshiba 500 GB HDD Input/Output Read Error

Hello Everyone,

I have a Toshiba Satellite C850 i0013 Laptop, the main specifications are as under : -

Processor     Intel Core i3-3110M
Chipset Model     Intel HM76
RAM     6GB(DDR3) : 1600Mhz
HDD     500GB (5400 rpm)

http://www.infibeam.com/Computers_Acces … cat-z.html

I was having Windows 7 installed on my 500 GB HDD along with Ubuntu (Wubi install). But, somehow Windows 7 stopped to start and the screen would not move ahead of the cursor blinking after the initial BIOS screen. So, I formatted the HDD using Gparted and removed Windows 7 completely along with Ubuntu as neither was bootable. But, now my HDD is listed as unallocated under Gparted as well it lists that there is no partition table. So, while I try to create one I get an Input/Output read error. I can't install Windows 7 onto the HDD as Windows DVD gets stuck before the selection of the HDD partition for installation comes into play as well same is the case while I try to install Ubuntu.
So, please guide me as to what should be done in order to save my HDD.

Regards,
Joojo.

Re: Toshiba 500 GB HDD Input/Output Read Error

You can start by checking the drive's connectors.

Then, be sure that the BIOS detects the hard drive and its manufacturer and model number.

You can try to check the hard drive's health by the SMART report. In a terminal window from GParted, you can use the command
sudo smartctl -a
for the drive in question. It gives info on the hardware problems related to the drive.

*** It is highly recommended to backup any important files before doing resize/move operations. ***

Thanks a lot for your reply .......... really appreciate it ........
How can I check the drive's connectors?............  because on physical examination they seem to be fine ......
The BIOS does detect the HDD as well as it's manufacturer & Model No. although it freezes for a while ..........  but comes back to normal after that .....
By the way here are the outputs : -

dmesg | grep sda

Re: Toshiba 500 GB HDD Input/Output Read Error

It is true that in laptop computers there are no long cables that get loose.

I'm afraid that there is severe problem with the hard drive.
If so, it is better to look for a new one.

SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: FAILED!
Drive failure expected in less than 24 hours. SAVE ALL DATA.

You could try to look for a check software from the manufacturer's
web page.

*** It is highly recommended to backup any important files before doing resize/move operations. ***

Thanks again for your reply ........ anyhow since you suggested that the HDD has gone bad ... i have ordered a new one.

Re: Toshiba 500 GB HDD Input/Output Read Error

Of course, if the computer is still covered by a warranty, you can ask to have it replaced.
