Topic: Lost config using GParted

Hello,
I had 4 partition on a 80Go hard drive
sda1 : linux 23Go (approx.)
sda2 : swap 3Go
sda3 : ext3 20Go i had just succeded to mount and make it readable/writable,
sda4 : Fat32 30Go mounted but not writabled.

i tried to change rights with command :
chmod -v a+rwx /media/HD_F33
no error messages, but nothing changed.

i launched gparted, selected sda4, right clicked in it (or something like that),
saw the option : create dos partition. did it. and confirmed the standard confirmation message.
what a surprise : THIS WHIPPED THE ENTIRE DISK

i now just could see a large grey and empty rectangle, showing me :size=76Go , empty ...
"happily", the system went on working so i could save my datas...
so, do anyone here would know if there is a way to undo that ???????????
any answers ?
thank...

Re: Lost config using GParted

Now at boot i see :
Grub loading...
Error 22   [and system stops]

does anyone knows if GParted makes a backup system datas before changing them?
and how to restore if it does ?

i already used gparted before : the changes were first added to a list at the bottom of the window; and i had to click to apply them. it did not happened here... and there was no way to undo

so, if anyone can help...

Re: Lost config using GParted

Which version do you use ?
TO restore your partition table you should try to run testdisk.

excuse-me Le Castor, but ....
Well i know you have nothing to do with that, but i told ubuntu many times  NOT TO LET this *OLD* version on their livecd !!!
You ran gparted-0.2.5, which is very old ! Many bugs have been fixed since this version.
This is really sad ! Please post a mail in their forum to ask them to stop this !

About testdisk, you may find it on our livecd...

I am really sorry about that, but i told ubuntu much times ...

Re: Lost config using GParted

it occured with the installed version of gparted (the newest, i suppose)
the system was working fine then (and from the hard disk).
i have found testdisk here :
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
i have downloaded the dos version of it and will try to run it from a floppy disk.
thanks.

Re: Lost config using GParted

Thank you very much Larry !!!

i used the floppy version of testdisk.
I thought it wouldn't work when i saw it didn' seem to deal with linux file system...
I first chosed "none", the soft saw the partitions but coudn't write them on the hard drive.
then i chosed " intel PC" and then the soft allowed me to write the partitions down.
everything is working fine again now...
GREAT.

strange... when i run GParted from the hard drive i can see : GParted 0.2.5... you were right.

THANK YOU LARRY !
