Topic: Unable to shrink NTFS partition

Hi ya'll!
I have a wimpy school laptop here and wanted to install Linux on it.  However, there are a ton of windows programs that I need for school yada yada yada and the Ubuntu install CD seems to be unable to repartition a NTFS partition so I came to GParted.

Here's my set-up:
* 37.2 GB harddrive (40GB by the manufacturer's standard... ;-) ) in NTFS
* ~34 GB used and ~3.5 GB free

Here's my problem:
* When I tried freeing up the 3 GB by shrinking the NTFS partition I got this infamous error message...

GParted wrote:

ERROR: Extended record needed (xxxx > 1024), not yet supported!
Please try to free less space.

* However, when i tried in smaller chunks, i was able to shrink it by about 1.5 GB but now i keep getting the error message over and over again
* I tried saving the error report by mounting my hard drive and saving the file, but when I rebooted into windows it wasn't there.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

hmm... i tried once, but i guess i can try again.  I did just de-fragment my hard drive.  Would that help the problem here?  I'll tell you if I get anything to work!
