Topic: usb stick let gParted crash

hello,

my mp3-usb stick doesn't work anymore. I think it could be a problem caused by empty batteries. But as soon as I want to create a new partition table, it fails and gParted crashes. I run Ubuntu (the newest) with te newest gParted. This is the post of my Console:

martin@martin:~$     sudo gparted

I hope you understand this little dutch..

I also tried Testdisk in the live-cd, but it sais also he couldn't write a partition table.

The player has 1 GB., but the gparted-ubuntu version only sees a little 250MB, so 3/4 has gone. That ain't nice. The output of dmesg| tail:

martin@martin:~$ dmesg | tail

Re: usb stick let gParted crash

uhm, i tried to make a partition table. But when i tried to, gParted crashed trying writing one. I've tried it with various filesystems, or how they're named.

The output of my console is now diferent, i don't know exactly what i've done, but i can see 1 gb of space:

martin@martin:~$ dmesg | tail
[17188350.352000] sda: Write Protect is off
[17188350.352000] sda: Mode Sense: 3e 00 00 00

[17188350.356000] SCSI device sda: 487296 2048-byte hdwr sectors (998 MB)
[17188350.356000] sda: Write Protect is off
[17188350.356000] sda: Mode Sense: 3e 00 00 00
[17188350.356000] sda: assuming drive cache: write through
[17188350.356000]  sda: unknown partition table

[17188350.376000] sd 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0

is there a way to write a partition table somehow else?

Re: usb stick let gParted crash

Device /dev/sda has a logical sector size of 2048

i guess this is your problem !
ATM GParted doesnt support more than 512 sctor size.... In fact it is in cvs but not in the official release atm !

Re: usb stick let gParted crash

and... how do i change? with the live-cd? and if yes, to which values should i change them?

6

Re: usb stick let gParted crash

last time i did, i completly destoried my usb key !
Usually, sellers give a soft to partition such keys.
I dont see any other way atm.
