Topic: Get error while creating new partition (SOLVED)

Hi

Im on ubuntu 9.04 live USB trying to format a hard drive with ubuntu 8.04 installed. I created a new partition table but when i try to make a new partition that uses the whole disk i get the following error:

GParted 0.4.3

Libparted 1.8.8
Create Primary Partition #1 (ext2, 74.53 GiB) on /dev/sdb  00:00:20    ( ERROR )

create empty partition  00:00:10    ( SUCCESS )

path: /dev/sdb1
start: 63
end: 156296384
size: 156296322 (74.53 GiB)
set partition type on /dev/sdb1  00:00:10    ( SUCCESS )

new partition type: ext2
create new ext2 file system  00:00:00    ( ERROR )

mkfs.ext2 -L "" /dev/sdb1

mke2fs 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009)
/dev/sdb1 is mounted; will not make a filesystem here!

========================================

i have tried with different filesystems but it is the same.
Its an 80 gb IDE drive.

Am i a total n00b? yes, of course
but what am i doing wrong?

Thanks

Re: Get error while creating new partition (SOLVED)

Can you try the latest GParted livecd, please?

Re: Get error while creating new partition (SOLVED)

ok, I'll try that this afternoon
but I think it's a hard drive thing because i tried to format and install with a windows xp cd(the only thing i had around) and the install did not boot.

Re: Get error while creating new partition (SOLVED)

solved using gparted live cd
I guess the previously installed ubuntu system didn't allow gparted to format that drive.

thank you
