Topic: [SOLVED] Useless Computer
I am unable to get my computer to boot after using GParted from a CD. The computer is Dell 4550 2GB RAM with XP sp 3 on the first HD. The page file is also on the first HD. When I originally set up the second HD I created two partitions: one 2GB, the other 40 GB, leaving approximately 180 GB unallocated. The first partition remains unused and the second only has data. I used GParted from a CD I created in December 2008 - I am unable to provide the version.
I had no problems with booting from the GP disk, after changing the boot sequence in the BIOS to CD Drive, then hard drive. I selected the 2nd HD. I moved the 2nd partition over, and extended it. I then extended the first partition. All simply and very easily accomplished. After hitting "Apply" the program went to work. GP stated it needed approximately 46 minutes to finish and I had other things to do. 1.5 hours later I came back to a black screen - initially not surprising since my monitor (Viewsonic LCD) is scheduled to shut down after a few minutes of non-use. (It didn't occur to me to disable it, and if it had those settings in XP should not have been loaded since I booted from the GP disk. The computer is configured to never shut down or hibernate.) Generally, any type of input brings the screen back to life, I enter a password and I am good to go. However, this time nothing. The computer was still on, and there did not appear to be any HD activity. Turning the screen on and off only provides the message "No input" and it goes to sleep.
I have tried to boot using GParted, Win XP, and Acronis boot disks, as well as re-booting without any disk in the CD drive. Nothing. I have had no prior indication of problems. The 2nd HD is 2-3 yrs old. I am at a loss, since none of the OS was on the second HD. The only thing I haven't tried is disconnecting the 2nd HD. Since the 2nd HD is not involved in the boot process, nor does it have any of the OS, I am unclear as to how this would help.
In any event, I'm approaching sledge hammer time. Any help any of you folks can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Sledge hammers can be so messy.
