Topic: 1.5 TB partition on Raid 0

Hi - I hope you can help please.

I have a new machine on order with 2 x 750GB drives arranged in RAID 0  - ie it will come with one Partition of 1.5 TB
(I'll be running XP on it)

Will I have any problems reducing the size of the 1.5TB partition and creating a 2nd one, using GParted Live CD? - I can't see any specs for this in the documentation, but I may have missed it!!??

I know other software have limitations on the size of partition that can be worked on, so I thought I'd better ask.

Many thanks in advance for your help
Regards

Re: 1.5 TB partition on Raid 0

What type of RAID are you using?

If it is Full RAID (e.g., a separate hardware card with drives attached to it) then GParted should work with it.

If it is an ATA-RAID (e.g., the motherboard BIOS provides RAID support, and Windows XP requires a software driver to access the RAID), then the current production versions of GParted do not support this type of RAID.  It is also known as Fake RAID.

This support is currently under development as can be seen in the following bug report:
gparted does not support dmraid /dev/mapper devices

If you are able, we could use some help testing dmraid support as noted in the following post:

Re: 1.5 TB partition on Raid 0

It's a Asus P6T motherboard with the Intel® X58/ ICH10R chipset

The storage spec is as follows:
Southbridge
6 xSATA 3 Gb/s ports
Intel Matrix Storage Technology Support RAID 0,1,5,10
JMicron® JMB363 PATA and SATA controller
1 xUltraDMA 133/100/66 for up to 2 PATA devices
1 xExternal SATA 3Gb/s port (SATA On-the-Go)

JMicron® JMB322 (Drive Xpert technology)
- 2 x SATA 3Gb/s
- Supports EZ Backup and Super Speed functions

Which I'm sure means that I can't use GParted, which is upsetting!
I can't find any program that will support either the partition size or some aspect of it.

I don't know what to do!!!  Anyone know of anything that will work???  I want to dual boot XP and Vista, but don't want to go through a reinstall!

Thanks for your quick response.

Re: 1.5 TB partition on Raid 0

The version of GParted currently under development should support your computer.

The author of Parted Magic has made a Live CD available that incorporates this new version of GParted.

Thanks - I'll try it and report back, but it won't be for a week to 10 days

Remember to make a backup of any important data you have prior to editing any partitions just in case something goes wrong.
