Topic: [SOLVED]Will GParted let me...

Have a 640Gb drive. 57Gb C: drive (23Gb free), 120Gb D:(79Gb free) and 418 Gb E:(380Gb free). D & E on extended partition. Running XP Pro SP3 32 bit.

I would like to shrink about 150Gb from E: and be able to get that unallocated 150Gb added to the C: (want to dual boot XP and Vista Home Premium x64).

Can I just shrink E:, move D and E and then have C use the 150Gb or does the fact D & E are on extended mean I will have to delete the extended, add more space to C then create new D & E drives? The tutorials I've found so far don't specifically address this (or I'm not understanding them correctly).

I don't know the positions of the partitions on the disk (a GParted screenshot shows this info), but I think you don't need to delete the extended partition. You can just shrink it. Shrinking the logical partitions in it leaves an "unallocated" space, that is in reality allocated to the extended partition. Shrinking that extended partition, leaves a really unallocated space.

You have to use the GParted livecd. Please, read the GParted manual in the Documentation page
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/documentation.php
There are some advices concerning the ntfs filesystem resizing.

Don't forget to take backup before operations.

*** It is highly recommended to backup any important files before doing resize/move operations. ***

OK I found a guide on the documentation page- "Getting Free space to grow-up a partition". It seems to lay out the steps very well.

Worked great! Shrunk my E: drive, moved D: & E: to the right, installed Vista to the new unallocated space and it dual boots fine. Now to try adding Linux to the mix.
