Topic: Problem extending /dev/sda1 (ext3)

Hi GParted Friends,

I'm very new to this excellent Software and i have one problem, and hope there is some solution.
I have a Virtual Machine running in VMware Server. The space of the VM was running out, so i shut down the VM and extended the disk file with the onboard software by VMware. No problems about this.

So, i booted with the GParted live CD (latest Version) to extend the /dev/sd1 with the fully unallocated disk space. But this is not possible. Maybe of the extentended partition /dev/sda2 with the swap partition.
Its only possible to resize the extended partition. Better to see on the Screensho below

Thanks
Patrick

sorry for my bad english. wink

Re: Problem extending /dev/sda1 (ext3)

Hello Patrick,

the simplest solution would be to delete the extended Partition sda2 ( together with the swap partition sda5) temporarily and then grow sda1 to an appropriate size. Finally you recreate the extended partition ( and use the total space left, as I would suggest) together with the tiny swap partition. This is a flexible solution for further changes.

Due to the name of your screenshot I suppose, that I'm right, if I repeat  my suggestion in your language :

Die einfachste Lösung wäre, die erweiterte Partition sda2 ( zusammen mit der Swap-Partition sda5 ) vorübergehend zu löschen und dann sda1 auf die gewünschte Größe zu bringen. Danach erzeugt man die erweiterte Partition wieder ( am besten den gesamten übrigen Platz dafür nutzen ) zusammen mit der kleinen Swap-Partition.  Man ist dann flexibel für spätere Änderungen.
