Can Gparted resize a NTFS partition without losing data?

I didn't see this mentioned in the about page nor the features page.

hum, we dont mention it ? I though we did.
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/features.php
Yes GParted can resize NTFS partition, but use ntfsprogs to do it. So if you install gparted on your distro, you *must* install to ntfsprogs.
BTW if you want to resize VISTA you need a special version of ntfsresize, that might come with ntfsprogs.

NOTE that we have some weird reports about resizing ntfs : all the tests i made were succefull -- and i made many, but it happens that xp wont boot after a resize. ATM, we dont know exactly in which condition it failes ; we are currently working on resolving this problem...

I know GParted can resize NTFS, that's not what I want to know.

I want to know if GParted can resize NTFS "without losing data".

Well do you really think we could give such an unsafe product ?
Something wrong can always happen
Any way, it is always safe to make a backup before playing with partitions. I dont know one software which doesnt specify to make a backup *before* doing any change on a partition. So you'd better do it first.

Re: Can Gparted resize a NTFS partition without losing data?

Partition without losing data is one of the features of PartitionMagic. On their features page, Powerquest claim that PartitionMagic can resize Partition without losing data.
http://www.powerquest.com/home_homeoffi … ;pvid=pm80
"Allows you to copy, move, resize, split, or merge partitions as needed without losing data"

Some other partition software also have this features, for example Paragon Partition Manager:
http://www.partition-manager.com/
"Resize, move, hide, merge, restore and convert partitions without data loss."

So I want to know if GParted also have this feature.

All those products mention explicitly that one must make a backup before any operation smile
But endeed GParted can resize without losing data : if it doesnt, it wouldn't be usefull, i think wink
