Topic: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

Hi,

I am attempting to partition my hard drive so that I can dual boot XP along with the Windows 7 Beta.  I was told that GParted was the best solution for shrinking the existing partition, then using that space to create a second partition.

My problem is that my entire drive shows up as "Unallocated" and it won't let me do anything except create a new partition, which will erase all of my data.

Any idea why my hard drive would show up as unallocated?

Thanks for any help.

Mark

I am running the latest stable version of GParted.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

Usually there is some problem with the partition table if GParted shows the entire drive as unallocated.  For example, partitions that overlap.

Would you be able to post the output from the following command?
     fdisk -l -u

This command is included on the GParted Live CD.  You can access it by starting a terminal session, and entering the command on the command line.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

Thanks for the reply.    I was able to grab a screen shot, but I can't locate the screen shot to the post to the forum.

Do you know where I can find the image once it is taken?

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

I just decided to hand type what came up....

root@debian:~# fdisk -l -u

Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30394 cylinders, total 488281250 sectors
units = sectors of 1 * 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x41ab2316

Device Boot
/dev/sda1:  Start = 63;  End = 96389; blocks = 48163+; ID = de;  System = Dell Utility
/dev/sda2:  Start = 96390; End = 976559219; Blocks = 488231415; ID = 7; System = HPFS/NTFS

Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30394 cylinders, total 488281250 sectors
units = sectors of 1 * 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table
root@debian:~#

I hope that helped.  Let me know your thoughts, and thanks again for your help with this.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

From the fdisk output, it appears that you have two drives on your system.  Both are 250 GB in size.

One of the drives does not contain a valid MSDOS partition table.  It is possible that you have a different type of partition table since the fdisk command only understands MSDOS partition tables.

So, when GParted starts up, it would likely list one of your drives as unallocated, and the other drive as having 2 partitions.

Did you check both drives in GParted to see if one of them has a partition table?

You can change devices by selecting GParted -> Devices and selecting a different disk device.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

Yes.  It shows both drives as 100% unallocated.

Let me know if this is the problem:
I have 2 hard drives that are set to appear as one using RAID.

Is there a work around for this?

7

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

I have 2 hard drives that are set to appear as one using RAID.

This can be an issue. True hardware RAID controllers are supported. However, the various RAID controllers incorporated to the motherboards  are often "fake RAID". These controllers aren't supported by GParted.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

Any advice as to how I should move forward from this point, or what my next steps should be?

9

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

Since GParted does not currently support motherboard based RAID, you could try to use the file system tools directly.

Take look at the manual page for ntfsresize.  This is the command that GParted would use to shrink the NTFS partition.  Then you will need to adjust the partition size with fdisk, since neither parted nor gparted support "fake RAID" yet.

Be sure to have a backup of your data in case something goes wrong.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

what a coincidence, i am experiencing the same problem; i too, am trying to install windows 7.

using the file system tools directly seems rather risky, is the thing.  Why would using the commands directly, rather than through the regular linux GUI interface be a more ideal approach?

11

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

However, some software features are available from the command line only.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

okay
so i will try it tonight
once i backup my data

i will post my results by tonight, or if i fail miserable and will have to reformat my computer than by tomorrow.

thanks.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

-> x-ecutioner
The previous discussion is about of a RAID configuration on a motherboard based "fake RAID" controller, not just a single hard drive listed as unallocated.

Anyway, taking backup is always good. smile

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

in case i misunderstood, here is the problem i am having:

Gparted basically says i have two seperate drives which are unallocated
in reality, i do have two seperate drives; but windows treats both my hard drives as one.

my assumption is that my raid controller is fake because computer management and gparted indicate different situations.

should i proceed with the command line stuff?  do you have any alternate suggestions for me?

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

I have a brand new Latitude E6400, Intel Core 2  Duo P8600, 2.40GHz, 1066MHz   3M L2 Cache, Dual Core running WinXP sp3.
It has a 160GB Hard Drive, 7200RPM with Free Fall Sensor
     Hitachi HTS723216L9A362
          Intel ICH8M-E/ICH9M SATA RAID Controller
The PC works quite well.  I need to find a repartitioning tool that will work with this SATA drive before I use the PC much more.
I am trying to partion the HardDrive into OS, Software, Data, TEMP, ...

I have used Partion Magic 8.0 several times (on non SATA hard drives) to change partion sizes and add new partions.  This all with out losing data or operating systems.  I have tried PartitionMagic 8.0 on this laptop and I cannot install or operate from the bootable CD.

I have also tried GParted 0.3.8 and GParted 0.4.3
GParted indicates:  There is a tiny partition that DELL put there for testing.  The other 149.05 GiB partition that is marked 'unallocated' is the C: partition with the OS and all else.  I do not think this pre-installed partition is any different from one I would create with a 'clean' install of WinXP.

I will appreciate any help on this.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

Using  GParted 0.4.3  :
1. Insert boot CD
2. Let it boot GParted Live (default ...)
3. Don't touch keymap
4. 33 English
5. [0] continue to start X to use GParted automatically
6. doubleClick Terminal

To fix this problem from Linux involves using the command line to call the
ntfsresize and fdisk commands directly to adjust the partition.  If you chose
to go this route, we have some knowledgeable people on the forum that could
help you with this.  See:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/forum.php

I use UNIX a tiny bit and would like some help to 'fix' and repartition my hard drive.  Please!

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

Hello anderci,

 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1                  63       80324        40131       de    Dell Utility
/dev/sda2      *        81920   312592769    156255425        7    HPFS/NTFS

partitioning of your HDD looks queer ! It has a total of 312,581,808 sectors, but "sda2" ends past this value ( difference 10,961 blocks !). "sda1"  has a size of 40,131 sectors, which should result in an end sector at 40,193 and not 80,324.  I think these values have nothing to do with reality on your harddisk.

I would suggest to examine the partitioning by following resp. searching the Volume Boot Records of the partitions. With two partitions, it's not too complicated. Then I would restore the partition tables in Master Boot Record with the investigated values and at last correct the "Hidden Sector" value for "sda2". With the help of a Vista recovery disk and some rounds of "chkdsk /f /r" , your harddisk should work again. As tool for this task, I would use "MC_HxEd", which is contained in latest "GParted" versions ( start with "fluxbox" menu on desktop).

If you are interested, I will give you detailed instructions.

Thank you.

My laptop PC is running Win XP sp3.  My 'Reinstallation CD' from DELL is for MS Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3.

My GParted boot CD was created from gparted-live-0.4.3-2.iso
Is that the latest that you refer to?  I do not recall a 'fluxbox' menu item.
I do recall 'exit', 'screenshot', 'terminal', 'GParted', 'Info', 'Screen resolution'

I would very much appreciate detailed instructions.

Again, thank you.

Hello anderci,

My laptop PC is running Win XP sp3.

OOPS, I think, I was sleeping. But anyway, its NTFS, what matters.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

OK,  I expanded Removabl_Disk_1 ... sdb(259MB)   Model: USB_DISK...  I guess it is mounted.
I expanded Fixed_Disk_1 ... sda(160GB) ...
I clicked on Show_block(s)

I get a general idea that you want me to copy some data to the USB drive to upload to some where?

I get lost there Copy BLK?, I cannot see that pressing [F5] does anything?, Midnight Commander? [Tab] shifts focus from button[OK] to button[Cancel] to 'listbox' ... .

The USB drive is still empty.

SCARY!  I doubleclicked on Show_Block(s) => a form opened with a text box, wherein I typed: 0#82000 ...  I 'pressed' [Cancel]

Thank you, but I do need more guidance!

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

Hello anderci,

anderci wrote:

no need to "guess", mounted USB Stick has  <>-mark in the treeview of refreshed "MC_HxEd". and it must be mounted with the automatic  "Mounting Wizard" of "MC_HxEd". It gets mounted, when you first double-click on any(!) device name (maybe "sdb" itself) and confirm to do so.

This is the 1st important condition !

The blue screen, which pops up, when you click on device names, belongs to "Midnight Commander" (1st screen : hexadecimal editor; later 2nd screen: filemanager ( left side: USB-Stick folder "BootRec" , right side local Linux storage folder "home"). You do copy-operations in the 2nd screen (file manager). BLK-files, the output of "Show_Block(s)" are NOT automatically stored on the USB stick (for safety reasons). You find them in "home". You have to copy them manually. This is very easy to do. The file, you want to copy, must be highlighted (mouse is NOT working; use arrow keys instead). To jump from left side to right side and back, use [Tab] key. If the source BLK-file is highlighted, press [F5] and just confirm (hit [ENTER]-key) ... and it "jumps" to the left. That's all. Now you stored it permanently. Shutdown "GParted" and upload the file. e.g. to "www.mediafire.com", copy the link address and give it to us in your next post.

SCARY!  I doubleclicked on Show_Block(s) => a form opened with a text box, wherein I typed: 0#82000 ...  I 'pressed' [Cancel]

If you hadn't aborted, you would have seen (on the filemanager screen) the 4MB BLK-file, which will contain an image of the first 82,000 sectors of your corrupted HDD. This is my basis of work! Just copy it to the stick and upload it.

I think, you can manage it now !

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

=>MC_HxEd
in tree, doubleclicked Removable_disk_1...
=>Mounting Wizard
Do you want to mount an USB stick to store Boot Records as files?
  [Yes]  [No]
Opened two windows: (white-Hex.Ed.) & (blue-File:/home/sdb.MBR)
=>MC_HxEd
in tree, expanded to doubleclicked Show_Blocks(s)
=>Block Viewer, typed 0#82000 , pressed [OK]
Opened two windows: (white-Hex.Ed.) & (blue-File:/home/sd-000)
[Tab]=>cursor on right half. [F5]=>Goto address: 0x0, [<OK>]
[F10(quit)]=> 'block files are not stored permanently. But you can do it manually with Midnight Commander [OK]

Selected (blue-File:/home/sdb.MBR) [Tab]=>Right Side,

Selected other 'Midnight Commander'(blue-File:/home/sd-000)
[F10(quit)]=> 'Do you really want to quit the Midnight Commander?' [Yes]  [No]
=> Boot Record Editor [OK]  [Cancel]

The USB memory stick is still empty.  I could see no way to 'save to sdb.MBR'

In this environment, I do not know how to 'manually copy'.

I think when the 'blue screens' were open, my use or [Tab] was moving the cursor beck and forth between the Hex and the Character view of the Hex Editor.  It was not until later that I 'stumbled' into the blue 'file viewer' Its two panels that I could [Tab] back and forth in were root... and home...  I could see the USB stick listed there as well as an 82000... file on both sides.

I fear that it 'permanently saved' that ...82000... file in a harmful place  where ever the root directory is!  and not on the USB drive.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

I tried again and may have succeeded?
copy file 'sda_0_82000.BLK   to: /mnt/usb/BootRec  [<OK>]
[F10(quit)]

It is uploaded now.

Re: Entire Drive is listed as "Unallocated"

Hello anderci,
congratulations !!! smile The download shows exactly, what I need ! The analysis will last a bit more time, but at first glance, I saw, that there are three (!) Master Boot Records, which show the history of your harddisk (only the first is active). Hidden sector value is acceptable, although it includes the unvisible Dell partition. I was wrong with my first statement, that the end of the Dell partition seemed to be far away from the physical end sector, because I forgot that "block" in fdisk context means 1024 Bytes. Usually "block" is a synonym for "sector" ( = 512 Bytes). Maybe the big Hidden Sector value is a problem for "GParted", too, but the main issue is the logical end past the physical end of your disk, which I will correct of course. You certainly get one or at maximum two sectors back and I will give you the command lines to store them exactly, where they belong to. Since we have a "backup" of your present state at mediafire, we always have a second chance, if something doesn't work correctly.

So far for the moment !
