Topic: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

Using version: v0.2.5-4

Great work on the GParted stuff. This has saved money on buying a commercial tool. However, I would like to use this tool under Virtual PC as well as VMWare Player and it doesn't work. Both of them are now free products.

The CD boots under either software and takes me to the point up to selecting the Keyboard layout. I choose the default keyboard option. Beyond that it just shows all black.

HTH,
Venkat.

Hi Venkat,
I got the same problem using QEMU ; to solve this i add to load the graphical modules. The problem seems to be around the video card auto detection, that failed on VM.
Please give it a try ; you may try the last realese too (0.2.5-5)

Hello Larry:

Thank you very much for your very quick reply. I downloaded the 0.2.5-5.  It doesn't boot at all. During unpacking Kernel, it gives a checksum error. I only tested this under Virtual PC.

HTH,
Venkat.

This is weird : it works very well on all of my pc : you had better to try it in a real mode, to be sure your iso is okay, dont you think ?
BTW : i dont know how works VM ... :-/

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

Well,
Using VMWare Server with GParted 0.2-5.5,
I encountered the same problem : the screen remains black after X starts.
But, this had been solved :
- select item "use old or manual video card" in the module loading dialog
- then, try a vesa driver in 640x480
I did not try to install VMWare tools because it seems it conflicts with the ISO image mounted in the CDROM drive.
Good luck.

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

I don't have a problem with VM, maybe you shoud try the latest version of GParted. And with VMWare player can't you made a virtual machine, you need VMWare Workstation.

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

I see that LiveCD 3.1.1 and vmware 5.5.1 work...
However, that is just my configuration, and I cannot get either the iso file or the CD image to boot in vmware.
The CD boots fine from the "host machine" (XP), but not from the vmware image (W2K3).
Following the same procedure as booting an Invirtus ISO from the vmware machine (which DID boot successfully), I specify the iso image (or leave blank for CD) from the Edit machine properties page for VMware.
I have removed VMtools and reset the video from 1280x1024 to 640x480 and dropped to 16-bit from 32-bit depth, per prior postings.
However, all I get is the file view of the cd (or iso image): Folder: ISOLINUX and FILE: GPARTED. And NO Boot activity...

Any suggestions would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

i suggest you try to download a new fresh copy of the iso : it could be corrupted, maybe ?

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

If the image i burned to CD boots the hw box (Dell laptop), shouldn't that same iso image or cd boot the vmware image...?

11

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

Second CD burned (from downloaded zip). Same results from downloaded ISO).

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

excuse-me, but ... you know how to burn iso to cd, right ?
BTW, with vmware, you dont need to burn iso dto cd. Just configure your vm to boot from iso.... This is more cool 8-)

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

I don't know the "right way" to burn an ISO; it's very possible that there is user error...

I used Nero; said burn ISO. When I take this CD and place it in the CD-drive, on the XP host, it boots into gParted. So my impression is: Yes. I burned the ISO image to CD correctly. hmm

But when I try to boot from this CD OR the ISO image, on the W2K3 vmware "guest", (change: Use Physical Drive to Use ISO image: ....\gparted-livecd-0.3.1-1.iso) I get only windows browser to CD - and no boot.

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

HM :-/ yes this is weird. Your iso burn seems to be good enough !
You 'd better have a look at vmware forum or something like that ...

Absolutely because here it is three years later and this post comes up *almost* helping me.

I'm closer b/c I found if you add the option noreplace-paravirt it gets further without crashing.  However now I'm starting a black screen.  Any ideas on how to get past the black screen?

Perhaps it might be useful to disable or remove the serial and parallel ports from the virtual machine.  This helped me with booting many different live CDs inside VMWare.

Good suggestion, but all serial and parallel ports were disabled.

I found this thread:  http://gparted-forum.surf4.info/viewtopic.php?id=291

where the moderator responds with use xvesa server ! but I don't exactly know what that means.

Do I add "xvesa" as an option or do I replace it with another.  Is adding "xvesa" enough?  I tried searching this option and confused myself even more tongue

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

Obviously it is related to the boot menu. The boot menu gave not the same options in the various versions since 2006.
I guess it has to do with the automatic graphics detection vs user selection. Using the automatic way the software detects the graphics adaptor and uses the right driver (i.e. nvidia, ati, etc etc). If this doesn't work for any reason, there is the option to choose an alternate boot way, or Forcevideo. This way allows us to select the graphics adaptor and resolution we want to use. One of the available graphics drivers is VESA, that works in most computers.

GParted LiveCD used to have both Xvesa and Xorg servers. It wasn't just a driver, it was an entirely different X-server. It's part of xfree86. Puppy, TinyCore, DSL, Parted Magic, etc... all have this Xvesa X-server included.

There isn't any xvesa package to apt-get in, so that's probably why it's not included anymore.

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

I am trying to use this wonderfull tool (LiveCD 0.4.5.2) on a Microsoft 2005 R2 SP1 Virtual Server, Unfortunately im getting Kernel Panic when it loads, you can see a screen shot here: hxxp://maddison-it.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/kernelpanic.jpg can someone give me any alternative startup command lines to fix this. Matt smile

Re: GParted Live CD doesn't work properly in Virtual PC & VMWare

At the boot prompt hit <TAB> and add "noreplace-paravirt". That used to fix it. Not sure if it works with that version though.
