Topic: [solved] Which version?

I've looked at the directions, screen shots etc and think I'll be able to figure out how to change my drive, but I'm having problems figuring out which version I need to burn to a CD?
I have a new HP running Vista home premium 64 bit, any advice, which file do I download?
Why can't that part of it be easier to understand?
(I used Partition Magic on the XP machines...)

As for my drives, I was able to reduce C on my laptop by more than 50% by just turning off the "System Restore"feature in Vista.  Now I have 100 for c and 190 gig to play with.
No luck with the computer though, I really don't need 300 gigs for my Windows C drive so hopefully this will all work out.
Thanks

Re: [solved] Which version?

If you are burning GParted to a CD, then you will want to choose one of the GParted Live .iso files.
The latest stable version is 0.3.9-13, and the latest testing version 0.4.1-1.  Either version should work to shrink your NTFS partition.

It is highly recommended that you back up your data first before resizing partitions.
Some other tips that help to increase your success are:

1)  Defragment your drive, preferably in Windows safe mode.

2)  Disable the swap file, and any other automatically running software

3)  Run "chkdsk /f /r" on the drive, and properly shut down windows

4)  Resize the drive using either GParted Live, or Vista's own partition shrink application.

5)  Reboot into Windows to permit Vista to perform it's own file system checks.  Do this prior to any more changes to the partition table.

Re: [solved] Which version?

The LiveCD is not a Windows executable.  It is a self-contained GNU/Linux distribution for the purpose of running GParted.

You will need to reboot the computer with the CD in the drive.
Provided your BIOS is set to boot from the CD/DVD prior to the hard disk, then GParted Live will boot up.

It is recommended that you back up your important data prior to working on your hard disk partitions :-)

Re: [solved] Which version?

lol
Yah, I found that out when I rebooted with the cd in.
Worked without a hitch, started up windows and gave the new drive a name.
Now I have the C drive of 100 gig and 2 others of 278 and 311 (and the other one with the recovery on it.
Our first computer had a 1.2 gig hd, these new ones are h-u-g-e.  :-)

Thanks for your help !

Re: [solved] Which version?

Good news.  Problem solved :-)

Would you be able to place "[Solved]" in front of the subject line?  Thanks.
