Topic: Extended record needed (1168 > 1024), not yet supported!

Trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 and partitioning failed both using the installer and using gparted. Apparently it failed during the simulation. Is this a bug? What should i do?

Re: Extended record needed (1168 > 1024), not yet supported!

This message is related to the ntfsresize software, and often appears when we try to use it in extreme conditions. This could mean a very fragmented partition, shrink the partition to the limit of the used space, or presence of very big files (some 100s MB or some GBs).

Please, try to use the latest GParted livecd to shrink the ntfs partition. Ubuntu isn't up to date, usually.

Before this, run defragmentation at least 2 times under windows, and be sure that you shutdown properly the system. Try resizing in more smaller steps. Temporarily move any huge file in other drives (external drive or memory).

Be sure to take backup of important files before any resizing operation.
