Topic: Partitioning pre live cd or with live cd

Probably in the wrong place, maybe even wrong forum but I want to install opensuse which I understand needs extended partition.
I presently have XP home as hda1 and 2 Linux partitions with a swap.
Should I delete one of the present linux partitions leaving enough unallocated fot opensuse plus extended or just do it with the live CD in mamual or expert or whatever opensuse options offer.

Hi,

you could use the GParted LiveCD to shrink your present partitions and make some free space for OpenSuSE. Afterwards, you could simply install OpenSuSE off their install CD.

Technically, you can go with just one additional partition (which will be your OpenSuSE root), since a swap partition (which you already have) can be shared among several Linux installations. However, if you think you'll sometimes need an additional data exchange partition or room for additional systems, you'd best create an extended partition (if there's not already one on your drive), then create a logical partition as root file system for OpenSuSE, and install OpenSuSE there.
I don't know if the OpenSuSE installer can do this partitioning job, so I'd recommend to do it in GParted. Afterwards, in the OpenSuSE installer, It may be necessary to choose the "expert" mode (or whatever it is called there).
