Topic: DMA or Not?

I have a CDROM drive that advertises (falsely) that it can do DMA. As a consequence if a live CD attempts to use DMA, my computer locks up.  Does Gparted use DMA  if a drive advertises that it can use it?

Yes, normally it will be on if DMA is available.
Maybe you can give testing GParted live a try ? It comes with newer kernel so maybe this locking problem will be gone.

Re: DMA or Not?

This is good to know as there is no way of controlling what the CDROM drive does while it is booting up.   I will use the live version on a memory stick so I can avoid the CDROM drive altogether. I have a Debian upgrade to fix with this tool; it needs a larger root partition than the previous version had.
