Topic: No used or unused info on partition

I would like to dual boot my pc using my current xp system and ubuntu.   The live ubuntu cd does not display the partition info so I am using the gparted live cd.   However it also shows that the main partition sda5 has 185.5G which is correct but shows no info on used or unused space.   Windows shows 25G of used space and 160G of free space.    I have defragged in safe mode. Can you suggest how to proceed please

Re: No used or unused info on partition

Hi,

Windows by default uses the NTFS file system, which is not native to Linux and thus needs some special tools to be handled properly. These tools have much evolved lately, so older versions of GParted (either un older Ubuntu live/install media or on an older GParted LiveCD) won't be able to handle NTFS partitions.
So you should make sure to use the latest GParted LiveCD (which is right now version 0.4.1-2).

Re: No used or unused info on partition

stormhead - thanks for your reply - I am using version 0.4.1-2.    The Ubuntu live cd can read my Word and other xp documents.   Gparted will not allow me to exit via the menu  and I have to use the power button to stop the process but otherwise the menu commands seem ok.    The mbrd is a A8n-vm with geforce and nforce onboard chips.
