Topic: Can I reformat a usb memory stick?

I having problems with a 2gb memory stick that I have.  I was directed to gparted by someone through the ubuntu forum saying that I could use gparted to reformat the memory stick.  What happened basically is that I was unable to get the proper permission to delete file off the stick.  I could create but not remove!  I tried using sudo etc with no luck.  I want to reformat the drive because I have files that are not evident but still assuming space on the drive.  The directories were removed but the files were not, leaving me with a Trash file that I can't remove because of i/o error.     How do I reformat a drive (if I can) when gparted is only reading my hard drive?  Is ther a document that I should be looking for on the website?  Thanks any help is gratefully accepted.  Cheers
