Topic: gui wont load (looks like static)

Hey.

I'm dual booting archlinux with vista. Right now my main partition for arch is only 4GB. I have around 150GB of space I want to expand it to.

Anyway, I burned the live iso onto a cd and booted it off of it. The boot works well until it tries to load the gui. The screen just starts to look like static. I can access virtual terminals 2-6 (or something like that), and the first one just gives me the output from the boot.

This isn't the first time I had a problem like this. When I was first trying to get linux on my machine I had to go through 3 distros before I got to arch. One of them was fedora. I actually got fedora loaded onto my hard drive, but when I tried to boot, the same type of "static" came instead of the gui. I never got that resolved (due in part, perhaps, to a lack of effort, since I soon after got arch installed with kde).

Anyway, any help resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

edit: oh ya, I should mention that while under vista, my graphics have been working okay, but there were occasional glitches I noticed (part of the screen is black on boot up for like a second, random textures in games begin to flash)

I actually got it to work by recreating the xorg.conf file, but I'm still curious as to what the problem is with the normal approach, if anyone knows.

Re: gui wont load (looks like static)

I hope you use the latest GParted Livecd.
In case of boot problem, you can try the alternative bootup, and run  sudo Forcevideo
from the terminal, selecting VESA as graphics driver. It works in most cases.
