Topic: limitations partition. [Solved]

System: PCLinuxOS 64bit
GParted 0.26.0
SMBIOS 2.7 present
hard drive, new :  WD Black 1TB      1003FZEX  (formated to ms-dos)
motheboard, old maybe 3-5year :       MSI     Z77A-G43 (MS-7758)
power suply: Thermaltake Smart SE    SPS-530M   (530W)

First I had problem created  partitions  on PCLinuxOS and Fedora on sda cable,
I had  (translated from pl to en)

This is ext4 332.56 GiB logic partition.
My Midori (when I tried open log) and Skype (now when Im trying write, before worked) stops once per hour, so maybe my sda
(cable or motheboard or one cable from power suply) is broken.

But what is wrong with this ext4 332.56 GiB logic on sdb partition ?
Why I can not create ?

Edit:
Instead 332.56 GiB I tried created 3 partitions about 98GB
and I have 98GB Eroor, 97.66 OK, and maybe 95GB Error

The "Error syncing / close / dev / sda1: Input / output error" messages indicate a hardware problem.  This could be a simple as a poor cable connection or as serious as a failing hard drive.

The "You can not satisfy all constraints on the partition" message indicates that somehow GParted was trying to create a partition that violates at least one partitioning rule.  You might have discovered a bug.

Can you try creating a smaller partition, perhaps with unallocated space in front and after?

-  I tried , I wrote at the bottom, and 1 partition from 3 have the same error.
- I used GParted 0.16.1 from UBCD v5.3.2  and he don't show    "You can not satisfy all constraints on the partition"
   and partition is created.
- I checked RAM , with UBCD with 2 version Memtest86 and without errors
- I checked hard drive:

Re: limitations partition. [Solved]

Thanks for providing the smartctl information.  I agree that the hard drive appears to be in good health.

The "Error syncing / close / dev / sda1: Input / output error" messages usually indicate a hardware problem so if the hard drive is healthy, then something else is not.  Perhaps the cable or cable connection is faulty and works intermittently.  You might try another cable.

Regarding the "You can not satisfy all constraints on the partition" message, you might try creating the partition using Cylinder alignment.  With Cylinder alignment, GParted lets the libparted library adjust the partition boundaries if needed to ensure these are valid.

With Cylinder alignment, partition created
          ( larger, smaller, what I want )    .
With MiB alignment, partition not created .

Thanks ! smile

PS: Older GParted used Cylinder alignment in default ?

MiB alignment is set as default since 0.6.x versions, dated 2010.
You can find related info in the GParted News.

Re: limitations partition. [Solved]

My friend suggests I had problem,
because I have new hard drive with  4k sectors,
but I'm not sure, I don't seen this problem with older GParted from UBCD,
maybe this is only my case.
( accidentally could be equal cylinders and MiB .

Re: limitations partition. [Solved]

MiB does support 4k sectors, and is best for newer drives.

As I mentioned earlier you might try using MiB alignment but leave an extra 1 MiB unallocated at the front and the end of the partition.
