Topic: GParted Live on harddisk

hi

i would like to install gparted live on a partition on my harddisk
and i followed step by step the instructions written on this page:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livehd.php

when everything has been done and the PC rebooted, it loads all the modules but
gparted does not start

the following lines are readable in the command line:

      loop: module loaded
      squashfs: version 3.2 - r2 (2007/01/15) Phillip Lougher

      BusyBox v 1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-4) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
      (initramfs)_

where the last '_' is flashing and waiting, i suppose, for a command, but which one?
am i doing something wrong? can anyone help me finding a solution, please?

many thanks in advance

regards,
blueyes

Re: GParted Live on harddisk

followed the same instructions and have the exact same problem - its a command prompt.  Going to look around and debug a little, but if someone has troubleshooting hints, I would appreciate them also.

instructions: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livehd.php
zip file: gparted-live-0.3.6-7

Re: GParted Live on harddisk

System - new systemax, core2 quad, nvidal nforce 680i motherboard, Geforce 8600GT video

More testing results:

3.6-7 live harddisk (from zip file)- tty turned off error as above, prompt given early in startup (before display choices)
3.6-7 liveCD (from iso file) - goes further, bombs at Xinit with 'no screen',  selecting medium for the config choice and VESA later, boots ok.  Maybe related to live harddisk issue, but not sure...

3.7-2 liveCD - works
3.7-2 live harddisk (from zip file again) - works

Does anyone know status of 3.7? is it stable enough to use or is it real risky still?

Re: GParted Live on harddisk

One nice addition, that I didn't see in any notes - I can set labels for NTFS partitions now.  Hated going back to M$ to do that!

Re: GParted Live on harddisk

It is already reported that 0.3.7-2 works better than 0.3.6 in many cases.

About partition labels: it was listed in the version news and change logs. It is rather recent, so it isn't included in the documentation.

Re: GParted Live on harddisk

gparted 0.3.7 should be stable enough. However, since this tool is dealing the whole filesystem, always it's a risk. Backup all your important data before you run gparted.

Thanks to both of you, good to know.  Where would one see that kind of info?

Guessed I missed that source, can you add a pointer?  I looked in the release notes linked from the announcement on this forum, and in the news on http://gparted.sourceforge.net/news.php
EDIT: i see where to look for the change log now (http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gparted/tru … iew=markup) but still wondering about the version news?

And for the original poster - maybe you want to try the 3.7-2 release also?  I'm happy with it.

thank you for the suggestion

not found the 3.7.2 any longer, but done a test with the even latest 3.7.5 zip file, at first spreaded on a ext3 partition and then on a fat32, with no differences beetwen the two filesystem (just a try)

unfortunately... same error:

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
      (initramfs)_

only the BusyBox is no more the 1.1.3 but the 1.1.9.2   big_smile

my PC specs are in no way comparable: amd cpu, ati chipset & graphic card

anyway, i solved installing the "SystemRescueCd live cd" on the harddisk: it has gparted embedded on it and it works perfectly from the hd

thank you again
