Topic: Hard Drive Not Detected

While GParted goes through it's detection stages, I am receiving these messages:

It looks as though GParted can't find my hard drive.  Once I actually get into the GUI, it is unable to find any hard drives.  It seems as though my hard drive isn't being detected with the GParted Live CD or Ubuntu.  Fedora on the other hand finds the hard drive, but when I act to resize my NTFS partition, I am presented with:  Error, directory or file not found.  Probably /etc/mtab is missing.  It is risky to continue (something alone those lines)

I would appreciate any help as I used to run strictly Linux on this box until school required me to use Windows.  Now that Summer is approaching I am looking to get rid of Windows and stick strictly to Linux again.  I'm not sure what has changed in the couple months that my hard drive is suddenly not playing well.

SATA Hard Drive,
RAID Autodetect / AHCI is the BIOS setting.

Thanks,
Ek0nomik

Re: Hard Drive Not Detected

Did you try the various boot options of the livecd?
Did you try the newest livecd version?

I do have the newest version.

Aren't the different boot options for different graphical settings?

Re: Hard Drive Not Detected

Maybe give GParted live testing a try:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile … _id=269898
This one comes with kernel 2.6.24.

The thing is, this hard drive used to work with GParted.  I had Fedora and Ubuntu installed just a few months ago.  Older versions of GParted used to work, so I don't see why it would suddenly not detect it.

Could it be that my hard drive is dieing on me?  I have Windows currently installed on it but it runs completely fine.  I don't have any issues with Windows on it.  I'm not really sure what to make of it, but I don't think a new version is the answer.  (Although I do appreciate more input)

Sorry, I didn't see the 'Failsafe' method.  This boot option also throws me the error messages that I posted above.

Still looking for a solution / insight as to whether or not it's just HD dieing.

Re: Hard Drive Not Detected

I will guess the problem is in the kernel support. Since the live CD was updated with newer kernel, different Linux (Gentoo -> Debian), sometimes due to kernel regression, it fails.
Did you try the testing GParted live ? It comes with kernel 2.6.24 and may work for you.

I have a feeling I will just be wasting a CD, but I'll give it a go shortly.

Re: Hard Drive Not Detected

To my amazement the testing CD actually detected my internal hard drive.

However, my question is this:  So the testing version of GParted finds my hard drive, how do I go about getting Ubuntu, ArchLinux, and others to recognize it.

Just because I can get it partitioned now doesn't mean I can actually get something installed on it because those distros aren't even recognizing the hard drive to begin with.

Any ideas?

Also, how is it possible for this to work?  Previous kernels have worked fine, why the sudden loss of support?

Re: Hard Drive Not Detected

As I mentioned, maybe it's because of kernel regression. The GParted live testing now comes with kernel 2.6.24, so it's a good idea if you want to use other GNU/Linux distributions, use those comes with kernel 2.6.24 or later, such as Ubuntu 8.04, Fedora 9, Mandriva 2008.1...
BTW, if you do not want to "waste" a CD, why do not you give GParted Live USB a try (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/liveusb.php) ?

As I mentioned, I have tried to use Ubuntu 8.04, and it *doesn't* find my hard drive.  That's what is puzzling to me.  I appreciate your help so far, I just want to get to the bottom of this.

Any more ideas as to why Ubuntu 8.04 won't find it, but the testing version of GParted will?
