Topic: Gparted on USB Flash Drive - unable to boot

Hi,

I tried installing Gparted on my Xporter Patriot 8GB, but without any success.
I followed these steps:

Choice 1 (Use GUI program in MS windows):

    * Download Live USB Helper to help you to create this Live USB flash drive. Just install the program in MS windows, then you can follow the GUI to create the live. PS. To run Live USB helper program on MS windows, you need a dll file "vb6stkit.dll". If Live USB helper complains about no vb6stkit.dll was found, you can download it on http://www.dll-files.com and read the FAQ to install it.

At first I reformatted my Flash Drive using this programm....then I installed Gparted by giving Live usb helper the path to the gparted ZIP.
Then I select "make usb drive bootable".

Every operation ended with"success".
But when I reboot and select "USB HDD" as bootdevice, my PC tries to start the Flash Drive but then directly boots Vista.

where's my mistake ?

thx for your help in advance!

Re: Gparted on USB Flash Drive - unable to boot

Hi!

The BIOS allows for setting up a list of boot devices. Each device on this list will be probed for an opetazing system installed there during boot-up, and the fist device with an OS is tghen used to boot the system.
So you need to make sure that the USB key is in this boot device list ("boot sequence") in most BIOS's terminology. Maybe your BIOS offers a boot menu that can be opened by pressing one of the "F-"-keys (read the messages on the screen before Windows starts!); you can thzen select the USB key from this list (without) messing around with the BIOS settings.
Please note that a USB key can eithger be partitioned (that is, used like hard drive) or foematted directly without creating a partition first (in this case, the key is used like a extremey large floppy disk - hence the name "superfloppy"). Some BIOSes can boot only from partitioned USB keys, other need a superfloppy, and some can deal with both variants - so you might want to play around a little with formatting your USB key.
