Topic: [solved] Gparted freezes during formatting

Hello.

I'm having a devil of a time with Gparted and formatting my drive.  I have a Seagate 160GB drive in a Shuttle SN25 with a AMD 3200+ and 2 gigs of RAM.  I can boot fine into the live CD, but as soon as I attempt to start a format on the drive into ext3, the system freezes.  I thought at first it was just working, but after two hours, the mouse was still frozen and the system clock hadn't budged.  Any ideas what's going on here?

Did you use the newest Gparted version?
You can try to use another boot option (it could be some X issue).

Ah, yes, I forgot to mention that.  I'm using the latest version (0.3.6).  I tried the first two options in Gparted.  I believe they were default boot and load to RAM, but I'm at work now, so I can't you for certain.  So if I were to try some other boot method, would you have a suggestion?  Are there any possible known issues with Gparted, X, and nForce 4 MCP chipsets with a 7900 GT video card, are there?

Most problems are related to the graphics card, so the option Force VESA driver is the one that works on most systems. In your case, I understand that you have no graphics problem but it is the mouse that freezes. As X handles the mouse as well as the screen, you could try other options too.

Another idea is to disconnect any UBS device that could affect the hardware detection.

Re: [solved] Gparted freezes during formatting

Thanks so much for your help.  I have figured out the issue and its not anything I would have thought of immediately.  Apparently I had a bad SATA cable.  Gparted saw the drive, but apparently that's about the limit.  Swap out the cable and *bam* everything works fine.  I find that absolutely bizarre considering no errors ever popped up in the BIOS or in Gparted, but at least it works now.  Thanks again for the help and thanks for the work you put into Gparted.

As long as the hardware becomes faster, it seems that "small" hardware problems become bigger...
