Topic: Resizing a Vista partition. Should I keep waiting?

I followed the steps listed here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows- … partition/
All I am trying to do is reduce the size of my main partition from 140GB to 120GB. The Gparted progress screen has been showing forward progress, and the HD is doing something, but it's been running for over 24 hours now. Should I just continue to wait? The 'estimated time' is way off too. It says 8:35 remaining, but each minute take over three minutes to tick down.

I am tempted to just reboot but that will probably be bad....

Re: Resizing a Vista partition. Should I keep waiting?

It isn't good to break the resizing or moving operations. It is very scary and usually leaves small or big filesystem errors that could make the partition unusable.

It takes sometimes very long, depending on the complexity of the operations we perform and the actual status of the filesystem. 24+ hours is certainly quite too long, but it is possible.

It is often helpful to run the defragmenter before resizing, and disable the virtual memory.
Perhaps it would be more easy to use the windows own resize tool. It usually doesn't permit big % of shrinking, but from 140 to 120 GiB, I think it would permit it.

*** It is highly recommended to backup any important files before doing resize/move operations. ***

I wait 3 days. :-) for resize from 120gb to 115gb.

Blue Mike & ThePlake. I just used the `SHRINK Volume' tool in Vista Disk Management. Shrunk from ~96 to 60GB in a minute or two. My first use of Gparted {Not live but from SysRescCD 1.0.1} was also earlier today to resize a logical volume by about one-half. Gparted dropping ~ 20 GB took only about twice as long as the Vista method had. Was very happy when I rebooted to home Premium and the disk configuration was as desired/expected!

CONCUR w/ Class413, but I do not hesitate to cancel an operation that appears to hang
My M$ vista procedure was Disk Cleanup, Defrag then SHRINK. Fairly simple & quick. Will review the HOW 2 you used.
